A level UCAS Tariff points
A level grades and their UCAS Tariff points, from 56 for an A* down to 16 for an E, with notes on resits, General Studies and what three A levels add up to.
Grade and points
A level
| Grade | Points |
|---|---|
| A* | 56 |
| A | 48 |
| B | 40 |
| C | 32 |
| D | 24 |
| E | 16 |
The values on this page are reproduced from the UCAS Tariff tables for 2024 entry onwards. UCAS can add or revise entries between cycles, so before relying on a figure for an application, confirm it on ucas.com and read the entry requirements of the course itself.
How A level is scored
Each grade step is worth eight points, so moving one subject from a C to a B adds the same as moving another from an E to a D. Three grades of B give 120 points; three of C give 96. Those two totals cover a large share of the points-based offers you will see quoted.
An AS level in the same subject is not counted alongside the full A level. If you sat AS and then completed the A level, only the A level scores.
Some courses exclude particular subjects, most often General Studies or Critical Thinking, from a points total even though UCAS scores them. The course page decides.
Add it to your total
The calculator includes this qualification as a type you can add, alongside anything else you hold. If your other qualifications are Level 3 diplomas from OTHM or Qualifi, they will show as adding nothing, because they carry no Tariff points; the routes page explains what they lead to instead.

We are an independent agent, not LSPM's sales team, and we will say whether a UCAS application, an Access course or a Level 3 diploma is the better option for you, even when the answer earns this site nothing. Replies within two working days.
