Level 3 Diploma in Business Management

Six units that walk round a business once: how it talks, where it sits, who works in it, who buys from it, how it pays for itself and how it sells. A full-size Level 3 diploma for people who want a business direction fixed before Level 4.

The Level 3 Diploma in Business Management does not carry UCAS Tariff points.

Its 120 credits add nothing to a points total and will not satisfy a university offer expressed in points. What it does lead to is a Level 4 diploma delivered by London School of Planning and Management (LSPM), or first-year university entry where a university chooses to allow it. If you need Tariff points, this diploma is the wrong programme for you.

In brief

Where the general foundation diploma keeps your options open, this one narrows them on purpose. Every unit is about business, and the six together give you a working map of an organisation: Communication for Business, The Business Environment, People Management, Customer Service, Finance in Business and Marketing. At 20 credits each they add up to 120, the same size as the general foundation diploma but with none of the maths or computing units.

OTHM lists 1,200 hours of total qualification time with 480 guided. The lower guided figure compared with the foundation diploma reflects that this programme expects more independent reading. If you are choosing between the two, the honest test is whether you would be irritated to spend 40 credits on maths and computing you do not want. If yes, this is the better fit.

Who it suits, and who it does not

A good fit if you are

  • Someone who already knows they want business at Level 4 and wants a full 120-credit year rather than a 60-credit taster.
  • Learners in part-time or family-business work who want to put a structure around what they already do informally.
  • People returning to study who would rather rebuild academic habits through business content than through general maths and computing.
  • International learners who need a regulated UK Level 3 qualification in business before progressing.

Look elsewhere if you are

  • Anyone who needs UCAS Tariff points. This diploma does not carry them.
  • Learners who want a specialist accounting, law or IT foundation; those exist as separate programmes.
  • Someone who wants to keep every subject open, for whom the general Foundation Diploma for Higher Education Studies is the better choice.
  • People looking for a professional management qualification with membership of a professional body attached.

What you study

six mandatory units of 20 credits each. There are no optional units, so every learner on the programme covers the same ground.

LSPM pairs the units: Communication for Business runs with The Business Environment in the first block, People Management with Customer Service in the second, and Finance in Business with Marketing to finish, so that the final assignment can draw on everything before it.

Entry requirements

OTHM sets the formal entry criteria for this qualification and LSPM, as the approved centre, applies them when it admits learners. As published by the awarding body:

  • meet their needs
  • enable and facilitate learning and achievement
  • enable progression

OTHM allows entry from age 16 and does not fix grades. LSPM's admissions team asks about your school record and any work, including part-time and voluntary work, because customer service and people management make far more sense to someone who has served a customer or been managed. Written English needs to be at a level where a 1,500-word assignment is achievable with support.

How you are assessed

One assignment per unit, marked by LSPM's tutors and sampled by OTHM. The Marketing and Customer Service assignments are built around a real or realistic organisation you choose, so you are analysing something you can observe rather than a textbook case. No examinations.

Assessment is regulated by OTHM under Ofqual's conditions. How awarding bodies and regulation work.

Where it leads: progression to Level 4

The natural next step is a Level 4 diploma in business management at LSPM, where the six themes here reappear at a higher level with more analysis and less description. Learners who discover during Finance in Business that numbers suit them sometimes switch to a Level 4 accounting route instead, and LSPM will advise on that.

Because the diploma carries no UCAS Tariff points, it does not satisfy a points-based university offer. A university may, at its own discretion, consider a holder for first-year entry to a business degree, but the designed route is Level 4 at LSPM, then Level 5.

If you want to compare Level 4 subjects in business and management before committing to this diploma, our sibling site level4diploma.org is written for exactly that question.

Progression agreements We do not name partner universities on this page. If and when LSPM holds a written progression agreement covering the Level 3 Diploma in Business Management, it will be listed here with the date it was signed.

Questions about this programme

How is this different from the Qualifi Level 3 Diploma in Business Management?

Size, mainly. The Qualifi diploma is 60 credits across four units; this OTHM diploma is 120 credits across six. If you want a full year with finance and people management covered separately, this is the fuller programme. If you want a shorter introduction, look at the Qualifi one.

Will I need to do any maths?

Finance in Business involves reading and preparing simple financial information: budgets, cash flow, basic statements. It is arithmetic and interpretation rather than algebra. There is no separate mathematics unit.

Can I count this diploma towards UCAS Tariff points for a business degree?

No. It has no Tariff value. If a business degree quotes a points total you would need A levels, a BTEC National or another scored qualification. This diploma is a route to Level 4 at LSPM.

Why is the guided learning figure lower than the foundation diploma's?

OTHM sets 480 guided learning hours against 1,200 total for this programme, so a larger share of the work is independent. In practice that means more reading and case preparation between sessions, and LSPM schedules tutor time accordingly.

Testimonial slot Real learner quote to be supplied by London School of Planning and Management, with the learner's consent, first name and the year they completed the Level 3 Diploma in Business Management. No invented quotes will be used.
