Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering
Half of this diploma is maths in one form or another, and that is deliberate. Six units, 60 credits, built to close the gap between leaving school without A level maths and physics and starting a Level 4 engineering diploma.
Its 60 credits add nothing to a points total and will not satisfy a university offer expressed in points. What it does lead to is a Level 4 diploma delivered by London School of Planning and Management (LSPM), or first-year university entry where a university chooses to allow it. If you need Tariff points, this foundation diploma is the wrong programme for you.

In brief
Engineering is the subject where the first term of Level 4 study exposes gaps fastest. Learners who have not met vectors, moments, circuit laws or basic statistics fall behind in weeks. This foundation diploma exists to prevent that. Engineering Principles, Electricity and Mechanics carry the physical content; Mathematics and Introducing Statistics carry the numerical; Design Technology connects them to how engineers actually specify and make things.
Each unit is 10 credits, six make 60, and OTHM sets 600 hours of total qualification time with 240 guided. It is a regulated qualification on the Ofqual register. It carries no UCAS Tariff points, it does not replace A level maths and physics for a university engineering degree, and its route onward is a Level 4 engineering diploma at LSPM.

Who it suits, and who it does not
A good fit if you are
- School or college leavers who want engineering but did not take, or did not pass, A level maths and physics.
- Apprentices, technicians and trades workers who want to move from practical engineering towards study at Level 4.
- Adults returning to education who need the maths rebuilt before anything else.
- International learners needing a UK Level 3 in engineering before progressing.
Look elsewhere if you are
- Anyone who needs UCAS Tariff points; this diploma carries none.
- Holders of A level maths and physics or a BTEC National in Engineering, who already have scored Level 3 qualifications.
- People who want a hands-on workshop or trade qualification; this is an academic foundation.
- Learners who want a broad subject choice at Level 4, for whom the general foundation diploma is better.
What you study
six mandatory units of 10 credits each. There are no optional units, so every learner on the programme covers the same ground.
| # | Unit | Type | Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Engineering Principles | Mandatory | 10 |
| 2 | Design Technology | Mandatory | 10 |
| 3 | Electricity | Mandatory | 10 |
| 4 | Mechanics | Mandatory | 10 |
| 5 | Introducing Statistics | Mandatory | 10 |
| 6 | Mathematics | Mandatory | 10 |
| Total | 6 units | 60 |
Unit titles and credit values from the OTHM qualification specification (PDF).
Mathematics runs from the first week to the last, because every other unit draws on it. Engineering Principles and Design Technology come early to show what the maths is for; Electricity and Mechanics follow in the middle of the programme; Introducing Statistics closes it, applied to measurement data from the earlier units.
Entry requirements
OTHM sets the formal entry criteria for this qualification and LSPM, as the approved centre, applies them when it admits learners. As published by the awarding body:
- OTHM Level 3 qualifications can be offered to learners from age 16.
- OTHM does not specify entry requirements for these qualifications. OTHM ensures that learners admitted to the programme have sufficient capability at the right level to undertake the learning and assessment.
- OTHM centres must ensure learners are recruited with integrity onto appropriate qualifications that will meet their needs, enable and facilitate learning and achievement enable progression. The qualification is offered in English.
- English requirements: If a learner is not from a majority English-speaking country must provide evidence of English language competency. For more information visit English Language Expectations page.
OTHM allows entry from 16 and fixes no grades. LSPM does ask you to sit a short diagnostic maths exercise at interview, not to exclude anyone but so that its tutors know where to start. Learners who left school with a grade 4 or below in GCSE maths complete this diploma every year; it simply takes more of the guided hours.

How you are assessed
Written and worked assignments for each unit. Mathematics and Introducing Statistics are assessed through problem portfolios; Electricity and Mechanics through calculation-based reports on set problems; Design Technology through a small design brief you specify and document. No timed examinations. Marked by LSPM's tutors, sampled by OTHM.
Assessment is regulated by OTHM under Ofqual's conditions. How awarding bodies and regulation work.
Where it leads: progression to Level 4
The intended destination is a Level 4 diploma in engineering at LSPM, where the principles introduced here are developed into proper engineering science and applied to real systems. The Mathematics and Introducing Statistics units are pitched to meet the Level 4 entry expectations directly.
No UCAS Tariff points attach to this qualification and it will not satisfy a points-based offer for an engineering degree, which typically also requires A level maths and often physics. A university may consider a holder for first-year or foundation-year entry at its own discretion; plan around Level 4 at LSPM.

Questions about this programme
How much maths is there, really?
Two of the six units, Mathematics and Introducing Statistics, are purely mathematical, and Electricity and Mechanics both rely heavily on calculation. Expect maths in some form in most weeks. The pace assumes you are rebuilding, not that you arrive fluent.
Does this diploma carry UCAS Tariff points?
No. Ofqual regulates it, but it has never been through the UCAS Tariff process, so it adds nothing to a points-based engineering degree offer. Its route onward is a Level 4 engineering diploma at LSPM.
Is there any practical or workshop work?
Design Technology involves specifying and documenting a small design, and Electricity includes practical circuit measurement where facilities allow. It is not a workshop qualification and you will not be assessed on manual skills.
Which engineering disciplines does it lead to?
The diploma is general: mechanics, electricity, design and maths. At Level 4 at LSPM you would choose a direction depending on what is being run. We do not name university destinations.
Not sure which route fits? Ask someone who will tell you straight.
We are an independent agent, not LSPM's sales team, and we will say whether a UCAS application, an Access course or a Level 3 diploma is the better option for you, even when the answer earns this site nothing. Replies within two working days.
